The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) is the world's highest-level decision-making body on environmental matters and serves as the governing body of the United Nations Environment Programme. Established in 2012, UNEA brings together all 193 Member States of the United Nations to set global environmental priorities and strengthen international cooperation on sustainable development. Its mandate covers a broad range of issues, including climate change, biodiversity conservation, pollution, sustainable resource management, and environmental governance. In the forthcoming session, UNEA is expected to discuss “Promoting Environmentally Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Food Supply Chains, with Emphasis on Reducing Food Loss and Waste, Sustainable Input Use, and Ecosystem Protection.” This agenda requires examining the environmental challenges associated with global food systems and evaluating strategies to improve their sustainability and resilience. The background guide will analyze the causes of food loss and waste, assess current agricultural and environmental practices, and examine policies that promote sustainable production, resource efficiency, and ecosystem conservation. It is anticipated that delegates will partake in debates that seek to strengthen the sustainability of global food supply chains. This involves critically analyzing existing environmental policies, proposing measures to reduce food loss and waste, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices that minimize ecological degradation. In addition, delegates will discuss approaches to balance food security with climate resilience and ecosystem protection. The objective of the committee is to formulate practical recommendations that advance sustainable food systems while safeguarding environmental and natural resources for future generations.
