North Atlantic Treaty Organisation
AGENDA: Formulating a Coordinated Collective Defence and Deterence Strategy in Response to Arctic Militarization, with Emphasis on Emerging Security Threats, Strategic Competition, and Alliance Interoperability within the NATO framework.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an intergovernmental military alliance established to safeguard the freedom and security of its member states through collective defence and political cooperation. Founded in 1949 with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty, NATO currently comprises 32 member states committed to the principle of collective defence under Article 5 of the Treaty. Its mandate includes crisis management, cooperative security, deterrence, defence planning, and strengthening interoperability among Allied forces to address evolving security challenges. In the forthcoming session, NATO is expected to discuss “Formulating a Coordinated Collective Defence and Deterrence Strategy in Response to Arctic Militarization, with Emphasis on Emerging Security Threats, Strategic Competition, and Alliance Interoperability within the NATO Framework.” This agenda requires examining the evolving security landscape in the Arctic and assessing the implications of increasing military activity and strategic competition in the region. The background guide will analyze emerging threats, evaluate existing NATO policies and capabilities, and examine measures to strengthen collective deterrence and regional security. It is anticipated that delegates will partake in debates that seek to develop a coordinated strategy to address the security challenges arising from Arctic militarization. This involves critically analyzing existing defence mechanisms, proposing measures to enhance deterrence and interoperability, and promoting greater strategic coordination among Allied states. In addition, delegates will discuss the balance between military preparedness, regional stability, and international cooperation in the Arctic. The objective of the committee is to formulate a comprehensive collective defence strategy that strengthens Alliance unity while ensuring long-term peace and security in the region.
